Lumina Foundation for Education
Lumina Foundation for Education is a private, independent foundation whose mission is to expand access and success in postsecondary education through research, evaluation and grants for innovative programs. One of the 50 largest foundations in the nation and the only one dedicated solely to improving access to higher education, Lumina Foundation addresses issues that affect educational attainment - particularly among underserved student groups such as adult learners, racial and ethnic minorities and first-generation college students. The foundation's reach extends far beyond the bestowing of grants, as Lumina Foundation serves as a repository for higher education communication, research, public policy and leadership development initiatives. Lumina Foundation sought Brainstorm's assistance to enhance and expand their overall image and to promote them as the premier national resource for information concerning higher education access.
Solution
Brainstorm created and implemented a dynamic website that communicates the many facets of the Lumina Foundation, including easy access to information on grants, research, educational publications, higher education facts, and late-breaking news. Brainstorm was responsible for the creation and development of the site's strategic architecture and sound navigational elements, as well as for the implementation of those elements through an appealing and user-friendly graphic design. As part of the development, Brainstorm conducted usability testing with Lumina Foundation constituents to ensure the website met and exceeded its objectives for ease of navigation and use. The website also utilizes WebTwist, Brainstorm's proprietary content management system, which allows the client to continually update the site's information without HTML knowledge. Lumina Foundation's website also features a mirror site, which is ADA-compliant, to assist the visually impaired. In addition, in conjunction with the Lumina Foundation's overall goals and objectives, Brainstorm suggested the creation of an email newsletter and developed it to complement the website in both style and content, driving readers to the site for further investigation of educational resources.
Outcome
The website reflects an established Lumina Foundation brand, while creating some unique identifiers with the target audience. A custom illustration was commissioned to better communicate the abstract vision of the organization, while impressing upon the visitor a common theme. Brainstorm's expertise in the area of website development and implementation enabled the creation of a site that increased awareness of the Foundation nationwide, reinforcing Lumina Foundation's reputation as a leader in expanding access and success in postsecondary education.
